Breaking barriers for people with disabilities

EMPOWERING people with disabilities promotes inclusivity and leads to the attainment of Vision 2030 and sustainable development goals, a local organisation has said.

This was said by Tariro Foundation of Zimbabwe director, Mr Godfrey Dzveta, on the sidelines of the International Human Rights Day commemorations held in the city recently as he called on increased efforts to ensure active participation of people with disabilities in all spheres of life.

He said reducing inequalities and improving access to information and resources is a key enabler of eliminating discrimination against them in society to enhance meaningful participation towards the nation’s development by people with disabilities.

“Zimbabwe needs to work on reducing the existing inequalities and improve access to information and resources for people with disabilities. It is also important to promote their human rights and have them at par with the rest of the citizens.

“Ensuring that there is non-discrimination of people with disabilities at all levels of society and in both the formal and informal sectors creates an environment without barriers for them,” said Mr Dzveta.

He added that addressing disability issues through advocacy is a shared concern and collective responsibility.
