THE family of Nothabo Zandile Tshuma (nee Khumalo) and her two daughters, Natalie and Nala, has paid tribute to the three lives lost in what they described as a tragic and senseless loss, remembering them as “precious flowers” whose futures were taken away too soon.
Nothabo (42), was found dead alongside her two daughters, Natalie (15) and Nala (5), at their home in the United Kingdom earlier this week.
Bedfordshire police have said they are seeking Nothabo’s husband, Ndodana Mkhanyisi Tshuma, who is wanted in connection with the deaths, and have appealed for information on his whereabouts after he disappeared following the incident.
In a heartfelt tribute, the family described Nothabo as a woman of strength, warmth and grace, saying she had an ability to bring light and comfort to those around her.
“Words cannot begin to express the depth of our emptiness and sorrow in the face of this tragic and senseless loss of life. Three precious lives were taken far too soon, our flowers prematurely robbed of their chance to blossom,” the family said.
They described Nothabo as an intelligent, confident and dedicated professional whose greatest joy was being a mother to her two daughters.
“Nothabo (Zandile) was a ray of sunlight. Anyone who knew her will agree that she possessed a rare ability to light up a room with her calming presence, warmth and grace. “She was an intelligent, confident, a consummate professional whose commitment to her work was matched only by her devotion to her children and family.”
The family said Nothabo was what is described in isiNdebele as ‘Imbokodo’ — an immovable rock — whose memory would continue to live on in their hearts.
“We will carry this ‘rock’ in our hearts always, remembering a life whose promise, beauty and potential were needlessly cut short,” they said.
They described Nothabo as a loving mother who fiercely protected and cared for Natalie and Nala, whom they said were the pride and joy of her life.
Natalie was remembered as a gentle and thoughtful young woman who was on the threshold of adulthood.
“An avid reader with a deep sense of loyalty, she was a fiercely intelligent young woman with a kind heart who touched all those around her,” the family said.
Five-year-old Nala was described as a joyful child whose laughter and energy brought happiness to those around her.
“Nala was a vibrant bundle of life and joy. Full of curiosity, laughter and boundless energy, she brought light wherever she went. Her smile could brighten the darkest day, and her absence leaves a void that words cannot adequately describe.”
The family said they were mourning not only the loss of the three lives, but also the dreams and memories that would never be realised.
“We mourn not only for the lives that were taken, but also the futures that will never be realised, the dreams left unfulfilled, and the countless memories that will never be made,” they said.
The family said they were drawing strength from their faith during the difficult period, quoting Psalm 34:18: “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit”.
“Today, we are indeed brokenhearted and crushed in spirit. Yet we place our trust in God’s promise that He is near to us in our grief, and that He will sustain us through the difficult days ahead,” the family said.
They concluded the tribute with a farewell message: “Nothabo, Natalie, Nala — Rest In Peace.”
Mourners are gathered at their Gwabalanda home in Bulawayo.
According to Bedfordshire police, investigators believe Tshuma left the United Kingdom on Saturday, 4 July, travelling from Heathrow Airport on a British passport.
Police launched a murder investigation on Tuesday after officers forced entry into the family’s home in Great Denham, Bedfordshire, where they discovered the bodies of Nothabo and her two daughters.
Detectives later released a CCTV image of Tshuma and appealed for information on his whereabouts, saying they believed he had travelled to Zimbabwe. British authorities are now working with international law enforcement agencies as efforts to locate him continue.
