Two fuel tankers caught fire in the Donnington Industrial Area along Goderich Avenue and Masiyephambili Road on Monday night in what is suspected to have been a fuel siphoning scandal gone wrong.

Bulawayo Chief Fire Officer Mr Mhlangano Moyo said the two tankers, which were filled with fuel, went up in flames next to DA Service Station. No lives were harmed, but firefighters have been battling the blaze for hours after several fire tenders were dispatched to the scene.

“We are at the scene and it’s terrible. Two tankers filled with fuel went up in flames, leading to loud explosions, and we are still trying to contain the fire. It’s been hours. We are investigating the cause,” said Mr Moyo.

Residents from Tshabalala, Nketa and Bellevue suburbs took to social media, with some describing the sound of the explosions as that of a low-magnitude earthquake, while those closer to the area said their windows were shattered.

More details to follow.
