ZIMBABWE was thrown into sudden darkness on Thursday afternoon after a massive power failure at the country’s two main power stations, Kariba and Hwange, triggered a nationwide blackout that left millions without electricity.
At exactly 2PM, homes, businesses, and critical services went dark as the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) reported a total system collapse.
“ZESA Holdings wishes to inform its valued stakeholders of a nationwide power outage that occurred today, Thursday 3 July, due to a system disturbance,” read the utility’s statement.
The blackout, ZESA said, was not just local power imports from South Africa’s National Transmission, Zambia’s ZESCO, and Mozambique’s HCB were also cut off in a catastrophic domino effect.
While some areas had their power restored by late Thursday, many Zimbabweans remained in the dark, literally and figuratively, as the nation waited for updates.
“Restoration efforts are underway and power has already been successfully restored to some areas. Our teams are working tirelessly to bring the remaining affected areas back in the shortest possible time,” said ZESA.
