‘Breastfeeding at work possible’

The committee was looking at ways of promoting breastfeeding among mothers.

Speaking at the meeting, Labour and Social Services ministry legal advisor Mrs Precious Sibiya said mothers in developed countries breastfeed their babies during working hours.

“We are hoping the move will be considered in the review of the labour laws. Breast-feeding women can come to work with their babies or be accommodated at a place near the mother’s workplace to allow regular breastfeeding,” she said.

Mrs Sibiya said this would reduce the supplementary feeding and promote babies’ growth.
She said supplementary feeding had given problems as there were counterfeit products which may affect the health of babies.

“Mixed feeding is not recommended as babies should be fed with breast milk only from birth to six months.

“This is not possible when the mother is employed. Sometimes babies end up consuming unsuitable food when their mothers will be away at work,” she said.

She said the arrangement was cost effective as mothers would not spend money on baby food.

“It will boost morale of the workers. The mother will improve concentration and performance on her job,” she said.

The breastfeeding week, which is being held under the theme “Breastfeeding Support Close to Mothers”, is expected to be commemorated during the first week of August in Binga.

Nutrition intervention manager in the Health and Child Welfare Ministry Mrs Monica Muti said the breastfeeding week campaigns would be focusing on raising awareness on supporting breastfeeding mothers.

“Support can come from families, husbands, parents, in-laws and peers. Some mothers do not want to breastfeed due to different beliefs and myths. We want to educate mothers on the importance of breastfeeding,” she said.
