Brenda Mhlongo on her Generations exit. . .’I was really hurt’

Brenda Mhlongo was one of the lead actors on SABC 1’s Generations: The Legacy but Drum has learnt that the actress has been axed from the show.
According to a close source, Brenda who played Rafiki in The Lion King for more than five years, is no longer part of the soapie.

In an interview with Drum, Brenda confirmed that she’s done shooting her scenes already.

“My contract was not renewed. The writers said they don’t know how to take my character forward,” she told Drum.

The mother of three who joined the soapie two years ago played the role of Nandi — Jack Mabaso’s wife. In the storyline she was unstable and was locked up in a mental institution — this role made her a much-loved character on the show.

“I was really hurt when they told me that my character was ending. I really loved playing Nandi — we had similarities in our personalities. And I learnt a lot from her and how she solved problems.”

She says she’d be approached by women in the streets and tell her how Nandi inspires them. “I would have loved to continue playing the character but there is nothing I can do about it.”

She says Nandi leaves with her new man Mandla to start a new life in Cape Town, away from Jack (played by Vusi Kunene).

Since she doesn’t have any acting jobs lined up, Brenda says she is focusing on putting a smile on people’s faces through her foundation.

She is organising a Christmas treat for street children and elderly people through her foundation, Brenda Mhlongo Worldwide Foundation.

“While on Generations I put my foundation work on hold but now I’ve gone back to it,” she said.

Brenda — who married her husband Edmund Mhlongo when she was only 18 — recently celebrated her 20-year wedding anniversary. — Drum . . .
