Brendan Taylor shines for Nottinghamshire

BRENDAN Taylor made it four centuries in his last five innings when he opened his English county championship account with a solid hundred for Nottinghamshire at the home of cricket, Lord’s, yesterday. The former Zimbabwe skipper, who walked away from international cricket after the 2015 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, provided the rock on which Nottinghamshire built their innings on day one of this County Championship Division One tie.

Nottinghamshire, who won the toss and elected to bat against Middlesex, closed the day on 289/9 with Taylor scoring almost a third of their runs.

Taylor opened the batting for Nottinghamshire and scored 106, off 188 balls, hitting 14 fours in his superb knock, before he was dismissed lbw by right arm fast medium bowler James Harris.

The Zimbabwean was the dominant figure at Lord’s as he ensured he added a century to the hundreds he scored for his country in his last two innings at the World Cup against Ireland, in Hobart, Australia, and India at Eden Park in Auckland, New Zealand.

Taylor scored 105 in the second innings against Loughborough MCC last week and yesterday he struck his 25th century of his first class career.

He had told the Nottinghamshire official website, ahead of the game against Middlesex, that he was aiming at doing something special at the home of cricket.

“I’ve watched a few games at Lord’s and playing there is something I’ve always wanted to do, so it will be pretty special for me to tick that ambition off,” Taylor said.

“Then it’s all about putting in a good team performance and hopefully coming away with a good result.”
