The installation of parking sensors by City Parking, which started last month and is still under way in Harare’s central business district, is being carried out in phases and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Easi Park and City Parking general manager Mr Simon Muzviyo said in an interview on Thursday that they would install and automate parking sensors for 5 000 parking bays.

“It is our prayer that come year end we should have managed to automate parking sensors at all the 5 000 parking bays,” said Mr Muzviyo.

Mr Muzviyo said City parking has started installing parking sensors in areas where there is high vehicle concentration.

“The installation of parking sensors is a long process and will be carried out in phases, he said. “Phase one will include Park Street, Park Lane, Nelson Mandela, Samora Machel, Leopold Takawira, Kwame Nkrumah and George Silundika Avenue,” he said.

Phase two of the project is expected to start between July and August and would focus on roads that have high vehicle concentration. The introduction of parking sensors is part of Easi Park and City Parking’s new parking system introduced in January to improve accountability.

As part of the new parking system, a motorist is expected to get a log in and log out receipt when they park and when driving off. “Once a vehicle enters a parking bay, it will be reflected at our offices. We can also check the number of parking bays that are occupied at any given time and the vehicles that are due for clamping.”

“It also serves as an advantage to motorists who also complain that sometimes they do not find marshals when they park their vehicles.”

The sensors would help in detecting previous parking fines that are due.
