TWO police officers from Plumtree who were each jailed 18 months for extortion, have been released from prison after the High Court granted each of them $100 bail.
Fume Chibvuri (34) and Aaron Zivuku (28) were released from Plumtree Prison after serving two months.
This is after they appealed against both conviction and sentence at the High Court.
In a notice issued to the Plumtree Magistrate’s Court by the High Court, Chibvuri and Zivuku are expected to report to the Plumtree Police Station every Friday.
“Applicants have been admitted to bail of $100 each which they are supposed to pay at the Plumtree Magistrate’s Court. They are supposed to report to the Plumtree Police Station once every Friday between 6AM and 6PM. They are to reside at ZRP Plumtree until the matter is finalised,” read the notice.
Chibvuri and Zivuku were last month denied bail by Plumtree magistrate, Mr Taurai Manwere.
The two cops were last year caught on camera trying to extort a bribe from a cross border transporter, Mr Gift Moyo at the Plumtree Border Post.
Chibvuri and Zivuku had pleaded not guilty to extortion after alleging that the video was fabricated but were convicted due to overwhelming evidence.
Plumtree magistrate, Mr Gideon Ruvetsa sentenced each of them to 24 months imprisonment but suspended six months on condition that they do not within the next five years commit a similar offence.
The two police officers were arrested after they threatened to arrest Moyo if he did not bribe them.
