A worker at a Chinese brick-moulding company allegedly pressed the wrong button inscribed in Chinese, resulting in his colleague being crushed to death by a mixer.
The company – Mazowe Bricks Company (Pvt) Ltd – on Monday appeared in court for causing the death of one of its workers, Greyston Damazio.
Cheng Yun stood in for the company in court, while Benjamin Chamboko – who allegedly caused Damazio’s death – is on the run.
Cheng appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Noel Mupeiwa facing culpable homicide charges.
The matter was remanded to September 15.
Prosecutor Mrs Tinashe Kanyemba-Makiya alleged that on September 19, 2015 around 3pm, the late Damazio was repairing and maintaining brick moulding machines.
The supervisor, Dong Anmin, assigned Chamboko to assist Damazio.
The court heard that Damazio sat on one of the mixing machines Tab 1, with his legs inside while fixing it.
Damazio instructed Chamboko to switch on the other machine, Tab 2.
He ordered him to press the third button on the switchboard.
However, the button was inscribed in Chinese and Chamboko did not understand the instruction.
The court heard that he pressed the wrong button and the mixing Tab 1 that Damazio was sitting on started running.
Damazio tried to get out of the machine but its blades shredded him.
