Golden Arrows win on night of draws

PRETORIA. — Round Two of the 2016 /17 Absa Premiership wrapped up last night with just four goals scored in five matches across the country.

Kaizer Chiefs are still waiting for their first victory in any competition this season after being held to a 1-1 draw by Platinum Stars at FNB Stadium.

Dikwena claimed the lead through a controversial goal from Robert Ng’ambi which television replays suggest didn’t cross the goal line, but Hendrick Ekstein netted in the second half to see Amakhosi secure a share of the spoils and at least pick up their first league point.

Defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns began the defence of their title with a goalless draw away to Maritzburg United at a rainy Harry Gwala Stadium.

Given the Brazilians’ hectic schedule and injury list at the moment, coach Pitso Mosimane will probably view the result as a point gained rather than two lost.

That goalless draw was the first of three on the night, with SuperSport and Chippa playing to a stalemate in Tshwane, while the Free State derby between Stars and Bloemfontein Celtic also ended 0-0, though Ea Lla Koto were indebted to a fine performance on debut from goalkeeper Thela Ngobeni.

The only match not to end in a draw came at the Princess Magogo Stadium where Golden Arrows defeated Cape Town City 2-0.

Vuyani Ntanga and Wayde Jooste scored late in the first and second halves respectively to see Abafana Bes’thende rise from bottom of the log to seventh place with the three points.
