Bridges turned into dumpsites

MARLBOROUGH residents in Harare are unhappy over the increasing amount of litter being discarded along roadsides and bridges in their suburb.

Harare City Council is being blamed for failing to collect litter on time, with residents claiming that there has only been one collection of garbage in the area since last month.

As a result, residents are being forced to engage in environmental cleaning campaigns as a way of reducing land pollution in their area.

Some residents are unhappy that they are being charged high rates despite the council’s failure to collect litter twice per month as required.

One resident, Zvenyika Kasenga, said:

“Harare City Council is bullying us as residents of Ward 41 into paying while failing to collect refuse twice a month.”

Another resident, Rutendo Waonei, said:

“A place full of litter is not a safe place to live in. Dumping of garbage everywhere is causing land pollution and this can result in the spread of diseases, especially this coming rainy season.”
