Brig-Gen Hungwe to be buried tomorrow

PRESIDENT Mnangagwa is tomorrow expected to preside over the burial of the late National Hero, Brigadier General (Retired) Jonathan Willie Hungwe, at the National Heroes Acre in Harare.

The Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage confirmed the burial arrangements in a statement today.

“The Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage wishes to inform the nation that the late National Hero Brigadier General (Rtd) Jonathan Willie Hungwe will be laid to rest on Friday, March 6, 2026, at the National Heroes Acre,” read part of the statement.

“His Excellency, the President, Cde Mnangagwa, is expected to preside over the burial ceremony.”

The Ministry added that today, a provincial send-off ceremony will be held in his honour and thereafter, his body will leave his farm in Mwenezi and pass through Ngundu and Rutenga Business Centres for other brief ceremonies, then proceed to Masvingo.

“The body of the late national hero will arrive in Masvingo at 2 pm, be airlifted to Harare, and be received at Manyame Airbase around 4 pm. It will then be taken to Charles Gumbo Barracks to lie in state,” the statement further reads.

Burial proceedings will commence at 7 am tomorrow and everyone is expected to be seated by then.

“The public is invited to attend in large numbers to give a befitting farewell to this illustrious Son of the Soil and freedom fighter,” the statement read.

Brig-Gen Hungwe (68), whose Chimurenga name was Vhito Masango Ferrari, collapsed and died at his farm last Friday.

President Mnangagwa declared him a National Hero for his service to the nation before and after independence. He is survived by his wife, Susan, and six children.
