Brigadier-General Stephen Boniface Chinhete (whose Chimurenga name was Mao Hurungudo), who died early this month and was declared a provincial hero, was yesterday buried at the Harare Provincial Heroes Acre. He was 65. Speaking at the burial, Minister of State for Harare Provincial Affairs Miriam Chikukwa said Government had been saddened by the death of Brig-Gen Hurungodo who died on July 6.

“Government has been saddened by the death of liberation war hero Brig-Gen Hurungudo, but we are also happy at the same time for the efforts he put towards the liberation of this country,” she said.

Minister Chikukwa challenged youths to be heroes, not in war, but in building the economy.

Family spokesperson Mr Daniel Paucheni Masango thanked President Mugabe and Government for the assistance rendered during the funeral.

“As a family, we want to thank the Government for providing assistance at the funeral and also for awarding our son the respect that he deserved,” he said. The burial was attended by Politburo members, senior army officers and some Members of Parliament. Brig-Gen Hurungudo got involved in politics in 1973 when he crossed the border into Zambia where he joined the liberation struggle as a Zanla cadre.
