PRESIDENT Mnangagwa has declared the late Brigadier General Donald Silundi Tshuma a National Hero.
Brig-Gen Tshuma died on 15 May at his Nkulumane home in Bulawayo.
He was 71 and is survived by four children.
“His Excellency, the President and First Secretary of ZANU PF, Cde Dr. E.D. Mnangagwa has conferred a National Hero status to the late Brigadier General [Rtd] Cde Donald Silundi Tshuma who passed away on 15th May 2026. Mourners are gathered at House No. 14010 Nkulumane 12, Bulawayo.
“The late Brigadier General [Rtd] Cde Donald Silundi Tshuma will be interred at the National Heroes Acre, Harare at a date yet to be announced,” said ZANU PF Secretary General Advocate Jacob Mudenda in a statement.
The senior former military officer and liberation war veteran’s Chimurenga name was Henry Silundi.
Brig-Gen Tshuma is remembered as one of the senior cadres who contributed to Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle before serving in the country’s armed forces after Independence.
During and after the liberation war, many cadres who fought for the country’s independence went on to form the backbone of the Zimbabwe National Army, playing key roles in national defence, security and institution building.
His death comes at a time when the nation continues to honour veterans of the liberation struggle whose contributions helped secure Zimbabwe’s Independence in 1980.
