British Council, Alliance Francaise to launch EUNIC cluster

officially launch a European Union National Institutes for Culture (EUNIC) cluster in Harare.
EUNIC is the network of the international cultural relations’ institutes from the member states of the European Union.

The partnership between the three organisations was aimed at building on past collaborations, and to formalise the existing relationship between the Alliance Francaise, British Council, and Goethe-Zentrum/Zimbabwe-Germany society.
Once it has been launched EUNIC will promote and develop arts and culture activities in Zimbabwe.

Formed in 2006, it has 29 members from 26 countries, EUNIC’s members work in over 150 countries with over 2 000 branches.
They work in the arts, languages, youth, education, science, intercultural dialogue and development sectors.
EUNIC’s members have a global reputation as Europe’s leading cultural relations practitioners.

They seek to facilitate cultural co-operation; to create lasting partnerships between professionals, to encourage greater understanding and awareness of the diverse European cultures through activities run through different EUNIC clusters.

Around the world, members come together in “clusters” to develop local activities.
Alliance Francaise, British Council, and Goethe-Zentrum/Zimbabwe-Germany society having been playing a pivotal role in promoting the arts in Zimbabwe.

Only recently the British Council was in Bulawayo, where it sponsored a number of theatrical productions at the just ended Intwasa festival.
It showcased three theatre productions, two of which were produced under the Hifa-Direct project and were premiered during Hifa.

The three plays – Colour of Dreams, The Comeback and The Gospel of Othello, an African adaptation of Shakespeare’s famous play – were showcased at Intwasa as part of the British Council’s theatre programme.
British Council has been largely involved in taking arts to the people, and has groomed a number of theatre executives, while promoting other art genres.

On the other hand, the Alliance Francaise has been heavily involved in the promotion of arts across all sections and in schools.
It was also one of the organisations that was active at the Intwasa Arts Festival, and has become a regular institution at the annual Harare International Festival of the Arts.
