TWO Britons, who were arrested at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport after allegedly being found in possession of 124 packs of dagga valued at US$669 000 concealed in their suitcases, appeared in court at the weekend.

The suspects, Tihaise Darlin Elisha (18) and Taylor Tamara Simone (20), both from Birmingham, United Kingdom, appeared before Harare Magistrate Mr Tapiwa Banda.

They were charged with unlawful possession of dangerous drugs and were remanded in custody until Tuesday for their bail hearing.

Prosecutor Mrs Mandirasa Chigumira told the court that on May 1, at around 1pm, detectives from the CID Drugs and Narcotics Unit stationed at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport received a tip-off about foreign nationals transporting illicit drugs into the country aboard Ethiopian Airways Flight 873.

Upon arrival at the airport’s arrivals terminal, the detectives identified the suspects as they retrieved four suitcases from the luggage carousel.

The two were immediately taken to the airport’s search bay where their bags were thoroughly inspected.

The search uncovered 124 packs of dagga weighing approximately 66,9 kilogrammes.

The drugs were concealed in four suitcases and had an estimated  street value of US$669 000.

The accused were issued a ZIMRA exhibits seizure confirmation receipt and taken into custody.
