A 39-YEAR-OLD man from Mzilikazi was arrested for allegedly stealing a staggering US$3 000 belonging to his sister.
The money, which was hidden beneath her clothes in the wardrobe, was taken while she unwittingly left him alone in their home.
Nkosilathi Tinashe Chimunhu faced Magistrate Evia Matura in court, where he was remanded in custody until 24 July, as the gravity of the situation sank in.
Prosecutor Mufaro Ndirayire recounted the dramatic events of 3 July, when Irish Chimunhu, the accused’s sister, left for a morning workout at the Mzilikazi Youth Centre, trusting her brother to stay behind.
With his sister gone, Nkosilathi seized the opportunity to betray her trust, rifling through her belongings and making off with a hefty sum of US$3 000, which had been carefully tucked away under her clothes.
The act of theft was both shocking and heartbreaking, a true violation of family loyalty.
When confronted in court, Nkosilathi maintained his innocence, stubbornly insisting that he did not steal the money and that he was not responsible for its disappearance.
The courtroom buzzed with disbelief at his defence, as the reality of a brother stealing from his sister left many shaking their heads in astonishment.
Some members of the public who attended the hearing expressed their shock at the shameless act and wondered how someone could stoop so low as to rob their own sibling. Others questioned if the accused had committed similar offences in the past that had gone unreported.
Fortunately, the police recovered US$2,800 of the stolen cash, but the emotional damage inflicted on this family may take far longer to heal.
The case continues.
