BROTHER’S KIDNEY DONATION HELPS SAVE HIS SISTER’S LIFE

BLOOD is thicker than water.

When Primrose Mupambachuru, 32, was diagnosed with kidney failure, her life took a dramatic turn.

Hospital visits became a regular part of her routine and her body became a battleground of pain and suffering.

Based in Mufakose, Primrose received her diagnosis after completing medical tests for a cruise ship job, which she ultimately did not qualify for.

This prompted her to begin dialysis three times a week, a process that was both physically and emotionally draining.

To help cover her medical expenses, she opened a GoFundMe campaign, reaching out to social media for support. Her son’s heartfelt plea for help quickly went viral, capturing the attention of many Zimbabweans.

They came to their rescue and raised US$25,000  But it was Primrose’s family that stepped forward to donate a kidney and save her life.  Although her parents were willing, they were ultimately unable to qualify as donors, despite matching blood tests. It was Tawanda, her 20-year-old brother, who bravely stepped up to make the sacrifice.

With the help of the US$25,000 raised, their mother, Zorodzai, Tawanda and Primrose travelled to India for the transplant. Tawanda returned home first, with Primrose arriving on Saturday.

“I donated to her so that she could live.

“Seeing her suffering affected me deeply. I was motivated by our strong bond and the fact that I could still live with one kidney,” he said in an interview. Primrose reflected on her harrowing experience.

“My condition was dire. I struggled to breathe and couldn’t sleep.

“I kept praying that God would save me, asking for the strength to overcome my fear.

“I am endlessly thankful to my brother for his generosity, and I cannot express my gratitude enough.

“My mother stood by me during my darkest moments when I was unable to care for myself.”

Primrose also took a moment to acknowledge the support she received from friends, family, and even strangers.

“I have learned so much from this experience, and I want to thank everyone who prayed for us or contributed financially.

“May God bless you all.”

The surgery was successful and, after two weeks, Tawanda returned home while Primrose continued her recovery. Their case is not unique; many families face similar challenges.

“My children, especially my daughter, were instrumental in raising awareness and gathering support.

“I initially considered donating myself, but Tawanda insisted on helping his sister,” said Zorodzai.

Zorodzai urged others to be vigilant and share their struggles, particularly with kidney-related issues.

“So many people are seeking help from Primrose to understand the transplant process.

“There is a lack of awareness about kidney health and we witnessed many lives lost during our time in the hospital.

“It’s crucial that we address these issues.” She also encouraged those interested in learning from Tawanda’s experience to reach out to him directly.

“If anyone wants to know about this process, Tawanda is your go-to person.

“He has been through it all.

“I also believe he deserves recognition for his courage.

“At just 20-years-old, he chose to help, even when it was a huge personal sacrifice.”
