TWO Harare brothers have each been sentenced to 18 months in prison for robbing a Lupane State University student of valuables worth more than $700.
Tatenda (31) and Timothy  Moyo (26) of Newlines section in Mbare appeared before Western Commonage magistrate Ms Tancy Dube charged with robbery.

The Moyos allegedly robbed Miss Sanelisiwe Ndlovu (22), a student at Lupane State University who resides in Mpopoma suburb. They both pleaded guilty and were each sentenced to 18 months in prison.

Sentencing, Magistrate Dube said: “You are sentenced to 18 months in jail, of which three months will be suspended on condition of good behaviour for the next three years. A further three months will be suspended on the condition that you restitute the complainant.”

For the State, Mr Mufaro Mageza said the Moyos attacked Ndlovu after she had dropped off a taxi just before 9PM, last week.

Said Mr Mageza: “On September 8 this year at 8:50PM, the complainant dropped from a commuter taxi at Emapositolini bus stop along Luveve Road. She met Tatenda standing on a foot path and she greeted him. She suddenly saw Timothy coming from behind.”

The court heard that the robbers started following Miss Ndlovu and she started running away from them.

“As she passed by New Life Church, one of the accused persons tripped her and she fell to the ground. The accused persons took advantage of the fact that she was defenceless.”

“They took away a black satchel containing a Lenovo laptop, laptop charger, Alcatel cellphone, tablet, and identity particulars. On the following day, she recovered her school books, a set of keys and identity particulars that the accused persons had dumped at a nearby bushy area,” said the prosecutor.

On September9, police officers on patrol arrested the Moyo brothers after they busted them with the stolen property.

The value of property stolen was $711,50 and $621 was recovered. — @andile_tshuma
