BUBI District is ready to challenge for honours in the National Association of Secondary School Heads (Nash) Matabeleland North track and field athletics competition to be held at Fatima High School today and tomorrow.
Seven districts from the province will compete in the event that will also be used as a selection meet for the provincial team for the nationals set for Hillcrest College in Mutare on March 16 and 17.
Bubi District head-in-charge of athletics Cain Ncube said they will field 92 athletes and he was hopeful of a better final placing compared to last year. Bubi came sixth out of seven in last year’s competition that was won by Tsholotsho District.
“Our preparations went on well. It was more vigorous than last year and we remain hopeful of a better showing this time around,” said Ncube.
Matabeleland North provincial head-in-charge of athletics Thabani Nkomo said they were ready for the meet and gave a thumbs up to the Fatima High School grounds.
“We believe the ground is up to standard. Our first event as usual will be the 10,000M boys’ 17 years and under race followed by the boys’ 20 years and under of the same event,” said Nkomo.
Matabeleland North want to perform better at this year’s nationals compared to 2015 when they came a disappointing ninth out of 10 provinces.
Harare emerged as overall winners with 21 gold, nine silver and six bronze medals.
Mashonaland East were second with 18 gold, 13 silver and 14 bronze medals, while Masvingo were third followed by Manicaland, Matabeleland South, Mashonaland Central, Mashonaland West and Bulawayo, while Midlands were last.
