Bucie has opened up about her experience with borderline personality disorder, a mental illness that affects a person’s ability to manage their emotions.
During her recent interview with David Mashabela, the singer shared her journey from diagnosis to finding support and managing her symptoms.
Bucie said she was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder after experiencing intense emotional struggles which led her to seek help online and consult a psychologist who brought clarity to her emotions.
“It’s not something we talk about enough as Africans, it’s still taboo, it’s as if you are crazy. I have been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder but so much made sense. All of it [makes sense],” she said.
“I used to freak out in my anger. I am calm, I like being like this, I like laughing, I don’t want to be mad. When I’m mad it’s like something switches and I just see red and when I snap out of it, it’s always like, did I do that?”
Initially, Bucie said she took medication but stopped after three months due to unpleasant side effects and finding out she was pregnant. She then focused on counselling and support from loved ones.
“I started taking medication and I hated it. I was a zombie, I was not interested in anything and there was something not normal about the way I was feeling.”
Despite going through a divorce, Bucie said she is now in a better space where she has mastered the art of laughing through life’s challenges. She emphasises the importance of self-awareness and emotional regulation.
“Being able to control your emotions? That’s not easy. When you can do it and you don’t need anything to help you do it and you do it by yourself sober-minded.”
In 2017, the singer stepped away from the spotlight after 10 years in the industry, saying she wanted to focus on the artists signed under her record label and spend more time with her family.
Having recently made a musical comeback she is excited for this chapter in her life.
Previously speaking to TshisaLIVE, Bucie said she’s excited to share her latest song Faithful, which was released on May 24, and she’s back working with her long-time producer Demor Sikhosana.
“We’re staying true to our musical identities while also incorporating current sounds. This blend creates a unique and memorable experience for our listeners. You can expect a sense of nostalgia as Demor and I have always had great working chemistry. I’m grateful to everyone who has listened to Faithful and for the positive sentiments I’ve been receiving.” – Times
