Matabeleland North provincial police spokesperson Inspector Billie Dube, said the buffaloes could have been forced into the flood plain after being alarmed by predators or poachers.
“On 9 October and around 9am, a parks ranger from Katombola National Park who was on patrol in the area discovered the 25 buffalo carcasses trapped in mud on the flood plain.
“A total of 13 of the buffaloes were adults and 12 were calves and they were all in a state of decomposition,” he said.
Insp Dube said the police were called and attended the scene, which indicated that some buffaloes entered the flood plain and managed to pass through.
