BUFFALOES’ second-half substitute Roy Mwenga rose from the bench to score the solitary goal that gave his team maximum points against relegated Monomotapa at Sakubva yesterday. After a promising start to the season, in which they were initially aiming for a Top Six finish, things fell apart for the Mutare soliders along the way and yesterday’s victory came after going for eight rounds of league matches without a win.
Buffaloes last won a league match in Week 20 when they beat Chicken Inn by a solitary goal at their home ground.
With just two minutes of play remaining, impressive Mwenga scored a beauty, much to the relief of the home team’s fans, whose team is facing real danger of playing Division One football next season.
Bankrupt Monomotapa, who were bailed out by the Premier Soccer League at the last minute for them to travel to Mutare, arrived at the match venue at 3:30pm.
The encounter started on an electric pace with both teams showing determination to walk away with maximum points.
The home team, however, created more scoring opportunities but sheer lack of precision in front of goal saw them making a mess of every chance that came their way.
However, it was forceful Mwenga’s 88th minute curler, after being set up by Prosper Matizanadzo, which gave Buffaloes reasonable hopes of surviving relegation on the final day of the season.
Buffaloes coach Timothy “Sicho” Masachi criticised his team’s attack.
“As I have always said in recent weeks, we are playing well but I just do not know why we are failing to find the target.
“We have been concentrating on the same aspects in training for a number of weeks but once again we failed to find answers in a game situation.
“However, I am happy that we managed to get the victory we wanted. All we now want is to perform well when we face FC Platinum next weekend,” he said.
