MANICALAND’S arguably oldest and best supported football outfit, Buffaloes’ new chairman, Blessing Mangwiro, believes the team is more than just a football club and deserves the support of each and every progressive football fan in the province.
Mangwiro was recently named Buffaloes new chairman as he took over from fellow Mutare businessman and former army captain, Tendai ‘Wabambo’ Chitowa.
The Big Rock Logistics proprietor has big dreams for the army outfit.
He told Post Sport that part of his plans for Buffaloes include mobilising the corporate community to come together for the sake of the club which he believes is a symbol of hope and aspirations for the people of Manicaland.
“Buffaloes is more than just a football club and those who know its history understand what I talking about. We all know how we used to get sporting entertainment from Buffaloes that was led by the late Brigadier-General Gibbs Kachana.
“We want to revive those good old days for Buffaloes and that can only happen when we all come together to support the club. Everyone has a role to play and part of my plans for Buffaloes includes mobilising the corporate community to come together for the sake of the club which I believe is a symbol of hope and aspirations for the people of Manicaland.
“I am only an individual as the chairman and my input alone is not enough to achieve what we intend to achieve. We want Buffaloes to reclaim its place in the domestic top-flight football conversations,” said Mangwiro.
Buffaloes were relegated years back to Eastern Region Division One League and are still part of that second tier league where they command a lot of respect as one of the title chasing teams.
The Mutare army outfit has been reeling under acute sponsorship challenges over the years, and that has hindered its capability to reclaim its place in the Premiership.
With its former sponsors in the diamond mining area of Chiadzwa now having their own team in the Premiership, Buffaloes were left to look elsewhere for financial backing.
Mangwiro said: “We will soon be rolling out a number of initiatives that include membership drive and corporate partnership, all meant to boost the club’s coffers. The team has to be run professionally for it, not only to achieve its ambitions, but keep its head above the water for a long time to come.”
