IT is now 10 good years after Mutare army outfit, Buffaloes FC, last played in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League and their current chairman, Ruramai Nyakonga, believes earning promotion into the elite league by the end of the 2026 Pacific Storm Eastern Region Division One League is an achievable feat.
Since 2016 when Buffaloes came so close, yet so far from Premiership promotion and were elbowed out by a Harare team that played in the region, Yadah Stars, the zeal to fight for a quick return to the top-flight has regrettable been not noticeable.
But come 2026, Nyakonga is looking at things differently!
As Buffaloes FC enters the 2026 Pacific Storm Eastern Region Division One season, the club’s chairman has outlined a clear and ambitious objective – to earn promotion into the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League.
“Our goal for the 2026 season is simple and clear: we want to be promoted to the Premier League. This club has grown steadily, and we believe the time is right to take the next step,” he said, adding that the club has retained the technical team that was in charge last season, citing continuity and stability as key pillars in the club’s long-term vision.
“Keeping the technical team from last season allows us to build on the progress already made. They understand the culture, the players, and the expectations of Buffaloes Football Club,” said Nyakonga.
Led by former midfield genius, Nyarai ‘Nyangwe’ Masunde, Buffaloes settled for fourth position at the end of last season’s Pacific Storm Eastern Region League, and went on to grab the Round of Four Pacific Storm trophy that was played at the end of the season.
The Buffaloes FC chairman also confirmed that the club begun its first meeting and preparatory session last week, marking the official start of preparations for their new campaign.
“Preparation started last week. This first meeting set the foundation for the season ahead, and everyone involved understands the level of commitment required to achieve our goals,” he said.
In addition, Nyakonga said the club is opening its doors to new talent, with player trials being conducted this week.
“These trials are important as we look to strengthen the squad and create healthy competition. Every player must earn the right to wear the Buffaloes badge. With clear objectives, continuity in the technical department, and early preparation underway, Buffaloes FC enters the 2026 season determined to compete and push for promotion,” added Nyakonga.
