A MAN has been sentenced to serve an effective 17 years in prison after being found guilty of raping a 14-year-old girl at her home where he was employed as a contract builder.

Kudzai Mungoza, 33, of Kwayedza Village, under Chief Chikuku, was convicted after a full trial before Chimanimani regional magistrate, Bishard Chineka.

Prosecutor Isaac Tangwena told the court that the offence occurred on April 23, at the complainant’s homestead in Chimanimani.

“On the day in question, at around 1400 hours, the accused greeted the complainant by shaking her hand.

“When the complainant attempted to withdraw her hand, the accused tightened his grip.

“The accused then grabbed the complainant by the neck using his left arm, covered her mouth and dragged her into a room where he proceeded to rape her,” said Tangwena.

The assault was interrupted when the victim’s aunt returned home from the garden.

Despite Mungoza’s immediate pleas for forgiveness, the family refused to remain silent.

They performed a citizen’s arrest and escorted the offender to the police station, where they filed a formal report.

In passing sentence, Magistrate Chineka said the court had a duty to protect children from sexual predators and impose sentences that deter similar offences.

“The complainant in this matter was a vulnerable 14-year-old juvenile, who deserved protection and safety within her own home environment.

“Instead, the accused took advantage of her innocence and trust.

“Such offences are serious because they rob children of their dignity, security and emotional well-being,” said the magistrate. He said cases of sexual abuse against minors were becoming a growing concern in society and required stern punishment.

“The accused used force, threatened the complainant’s freedom and attempted to silence her by covering her mouth. The court cannot treat such conduct lightly.

“A clear message must be sent that anyone who preys on children will face the full wrath of the law.

“Young girls deserve to grow up free from fear, abuse and exploitation,” he said.
