IT is a hive of activity at various pick-up points in Bulawayo, where buses are ferrying learners to boarding schools for the start of the 2026 academic year.
At the Bulawayo City Hall parking area, tens of buses were observed by a Zimpapers news crew transporting hundreds of learners.
Overwhelmed by the large numbers of boarders, some schools hired private bus operators and trucks to carry school trunks, groceries, mattresses and other luggage.
The buses were headed to boarding schools on the outskirts of Bulawayo, as well as in Matabeleland North and Matabeleland South provinces.
At the OK Mart parking area, school buses ferried learners bound for schools such as Tsholotsho High, Minda High, Gloag High, Usher High and others.
It was also a hive of activity at Entumbane Bus Terminus, where some day schoolers who spent the festive season in Bulawayo made their way back to their rural areas in Lupane, Binga and Jotsholo ahead of schools opening on Tuesday.
Parents were also busy with last-minute shopping for school uniforms and stationery in shops across the city centre.
Outlets involved in photocopying recorded brisk business as early as 9am, with parents buying bond paper and photocopying stationery and other documents.
