BULAWAYO-BASED 2D animator, Wayne Tabaka “Left Hand Animation” Ndebele has reflected on his pivotal role at the Ultimate Battlerivalskool Africa 2025, held from 10 – 12 July at The Cirk in Johannesburg’s Cresta Shopping Mall.
The prominent event, backed by Trace Southern Africa, Alliance Française de Bulawayo, and YFM, brought together the world’s finest dancers to battle across gender-separated categories.
Ndebele served as the event’s lead graphic designer, creating marketing materials that amplified its global appeal. His contributions extended beyond visuals: he joined forces with dancers Major Prodi, Uncle Stunna, and Denzel Mpfeka to clinch silver in the Afro-dance category, while Uncle Stunna also secured individual silver in the male Afro category.
“This year’s battles were neck-and-neck and the event founder Totengu put dance on the world map,” Ndebele remarked.
For Ndebele, the experience was transformative. It marked his first trip to South Africa, where he interviewed with YFM about his animation career and rubbed shoulders with icons like famous actor Hungani Ndlovu and legendary judges the Dube Twins.
The event featured a conference led by international judges from Korea, Canada, Ghana, and South Africa, alongside exhibitions showcasing dancers from Cyprus, the USA, South Korea, and South Africa.
Ndebele’s journey began with hand-drawn animations on an old cellphone before evolving into his signature, “Afrocentric anime” style—a fusion of Japanese anime influences and African cultural motifs. He now animates using an iPad and Apple Pencil.
Inspired by masters Yutaka Nakamura and Hayao Miyazaki, he turned professional two years ago. His work includes directing the “Lost in Translation” webtoon series for Alliance Française de Bulawayo, promoting French language and cultural exchange.
“Meeting world-class artists at Battlerivalskool fueled my creativity,” said Ndebele.
He dreams of establishing his own studio to elevate African storytelling.
“My journey proves passion and persistence turn dreams into reality.”
Ndebele’s dual triumph – onstage and behind the scenes has cemented his status as a rising cultural force bridging animation, dance, and African heritage. – Follow on X @MbuleloMpofu
