Bulawayo Bomber disappointed

HEAVYWEIGHT boxer, Elvis Moyo is distraught after his American opponent Eddie Chambers pulled out of a non-title bout that had been scheduled for Namibia on November 12.

The South Africa-based former World Boxing Federation (WBF) Africa heavyweight champion had been hoping to end a forced three-year sabbatical due to lack of opponents by stepping up to fight Chambers, who informed the Zimbabwean boxer on Saturday that he cannot make it to Namibia for the               bout.

Lion Heart Boxing Productions’ chief finance officer Edward Mendy said Chambers will be available to fight Moyo on December 17 or in January next year.

“I wish to write the letter to confirm that Eddie Chambers will not be participating in your next boxing tournament.

“Unfortunately, Eddie Chambers discovered that his passport has less than six months left on it. As a result, he cannot travel on it. He applied for an expedited passport two weeks ago but is unlikely to get it in time. He was told it would take three to four weeks to process, as the State department is back up.

“We apologise for any inconvenience and look forward to rescheduling of Chambers’ fight with Elvis Moyo at one of your future tournaments, preferably on December 17, 2022 or in January 2023,” reads part of Mendy’s letter dated November 5.

Known by his stage name “Bulawayo Bomber”, Moyo who has gone for three years without setting his foot inside the ring, having last fought in May 2019 when he lost by a unanimous judges’ decision to Arnold Gjergjaj, signed his contract for Chambers’ fight last month in Johannesburg.

In an interview from his Johannesburg base yesterday, Moyo, who has intensified his training expressed his disappointment on the fight cancellation.

“I had invested a lot in terms of training and to be honest, I’m disappointed. I had been looking forward to returning to the ring and smash Chambers.

“I had been doing some sparring sessions and now I pray that the December 17 fight against a Nigerian guy that I’ve been told is keen at fighting me materialises. I’ll keep training, hoping that either the Nigerian guy or Chambers comes through because I’ve been on the sidelines for a while. I just want to fight,” Moyo said. — @ZililoR
