THE Nketa Boxing Club is in desperate need of sponsorship to revive and groom boxing talent in Bulawayo Province.

The Bulawayo-based club has been facing hardships with its main challenge being attaining financial assistance to buy gloves and punching bags and other equipment for boxers training at the club.

Nketa Boxing Club chairman and ZBF technical director Steven Masiyambumbi said the club is in need of gym and other training equipment.

“The club is in need of money to purchase boxing gloves, punching bags, ropes and gym equipment for training for our boxers because the facilities we have are very poor and most of the equipment is worn out,” Masiyambumbi said.

“Most of the training material has worn off because it has been used over the years and our gyms are now ill-equiped, so there is a need for purchasing new gym equipment.”

Masiyambumbi said the main challenge faced by the club is financial assistance from the corporate world.

“Our biggest challenge is obtaining sponsorship from the corporate world to fully function as a club and have the boxing gear needed by the pugilists.

So we are calling on the corporate world for financial assistance in terms of training tools,” he said.

He said another challenge was hosting tournaments at their venue since the costs of hiring and moving a boxing ring were exorbitant.

“We hope to have our own boxing ring so that we can hold huge tournaments at our venue because the cost of hiring and transporting one is very high since the club is operating without sponsors,” said Masiyambumbi.

“Our club is open to every age group and we train boxers up to the age of 40 while the youngest is eight years old.” — @ J_sihwa
