THE late Bulawayo businessman Khumbulani Nsingo, who fatally shot himself with a pistol on the outskirts of the city last Sunday, has been laid to rest.

Nsingo was 39 and is survived by his wife and children.

Yesterday, hundreds of mourners — including family, friends, employees from his various business ventures such as bottle stores, a butchery and a fabric outlet, as well as neighbours from his Waterford residence —gathered at Umvutsha Cemetery for the burial ceremony.

A memorial service was held earlier in the day at the Nsingo family home in Waterford, where he was remembered as a devoted father who prioritised the welfare of his children above all else.

Speakers also described him as a cheerful and approachable individual whose warm spirit made him a source of comfort to family members during difficult times.

The family appealed to mourners not to speculate or spread rumours surrounding Nsingo’s death, warning that such behaviour could negatively affect the mental health of his children — particularly his eldest son, a teenager enrolled at a local private school, who is preparing for public examinations.

Among those in attendance were scores of illegal money changers, commonly known as Osiphatheleni, who came to pay their respects to a man who had once been part of their trade before venturing into formal business.

According to national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi, Nsingo committed suicide by shooting himself in the head with a pistol.

“Police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the suicide of Khumbulani Nsingo, a businessman operating in Bulawayo and Matabeleland South Province.

The incident occurred on a Sunday afternoon, and his body was transferred to a local hospital for post-mortem examination,” said Commissioner Nyathi.

Commissioner Nyathi also dismissed earlier reports suggesting that Nsingo was a member of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) stationed at Bulawayo Central Police Station.

“He was not a member of the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP),” he clarified.

Following news of Nsingo’s death, some of his close friends told Chronicle that he had previously made references to suicide.

They admitted to dismissing his remarks as dark humour from someone burdened by issues he had not yet shared with those closest to him.
