MORE sporting disciplines will be added to the Bulawayo Christian Sports League.
President of the league Timothy Mandizadza confirmed they are working on introducing more disciplines to their curricular.
Mandizadza said this was a move to try and accommodate a large number of Christians who are interested in sport.
“The past year has been good but we’re concerned with the poor participation of people in sport particularly women in the BCL Netball League so after a survey was carried out we realised that some of the people want to take part in other disciplines,” he said.
Mandizadza said the executive would be meeting on Saturday to finalise which disciplines would be introduced this season.
“The executive will meet to finalise which disciplines they will introduce,” he said.
“We’re planning to work hand-in-hand with some influential women who are role models in the Christian community to try and encourage girls to participate in netball.
“Sport teaches people to be disciplined and keeps the body fit while keeping the youth away from some activities that are not encouraged in the Christian community,” he said.
Mandizadza said there is a lot of talent among Christians and that increasing the sporting disciplines could be good to nurse more talent.
The president of the Christian League said the increase in the number of sporting disciplines in the league could also help solve the problem of poor participation by women in sport.
“The youth should use BCL as a stepping stone and a channel to discover sporting talents, there’re a lot of talented athletes in the Christian community and I think that the Zimbabwe National Under-20 team that won a gold medal at the Region 5 Games is a sign that women can do better even at international platforms and for us to do well we’ve to start by doing well in our local competitions through participation and through the introduction of more disciplines,” he said.
