BULAWAYO City Council recently condemned 1,5 tonnes of elephant meat after inspectors declared it spoiled and unfit for human consumption.
The meat was discovered at Hillside Junior School during routine inspections carried out by council health officials.
According to the latest council report, 1 500 kilogrammes of elephant meat were condemned after inspectors found it rotten and aesthetically unsuitable for human consumption.
The meat was among various food products confiscated and destroyed during inspections conducted across the city.
Other condemned food items from other premises in Bulawayo included expired beverages, dented canned foods, improperly stored dairy products and unwholesome meat products found at various businesses.
Council health inspectors carried out more than 1 700 inspections during the month and issued dozens of notices to businesses violating public health regulations.
Authorities have not yet disclosed how the elephant meat came to be stored at the school.
