The City of Bulawayo on Saturday celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Bulawayo City Pool, formerly known as Borrow Swimming Pool, with officials highlighting the facility’s contribution to the development of swimming in the city.
The pool was established in 1926, the same year Highlanders Football Club and Crusaders Swimming Club were founded, making the year significant in the history of sport in Bulawayo.
The centenary celebrations brought together city officials, swimming clubs and other stakeholders who reflected on the importance of swimming and the role played by the facility over the past century.
Mayor Senator David Coltart’s remarks were delivered by Councillor Ntombizodwa Khumalo, while Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Bulawayo Metropolitan Province Judith Ncube was represented by the ministry’s permanent secretary, Mr Paul Nyoni.
Town Clerk Mr Christopher Dube was represented by the Director of Housing and Community Services, Mr Dictor Khumalo, while Bulawayo Amateur Swimming Association (BASA) vice-chairperson Mr Vusumuzi Ncube also spoke at the event.
The speakers highlighted the importance of swimming in Bulawayo and the need to continue supporting the development of the sport.
As part of the celebrations, the City of Bulawayo issued certificates of appreciation to swimming clubs and other organisations that have contributed to the development and continued use of the pool over the years.
The celebrations also featured a swimming gala, with swimmers taking part in various events.
Members of the public were encouraged to make use of the city’s swimming pools, which are manned by trained professionals to ensure the safety of swimmers.
The centenary celebrations provided an opportunity for the city to reflect on the history of the facility while encouraging residents to embrace swimming as both a sporting activity and a recreational pursuit.
