LUNGELWE Nyoni of Bulawayo Chess Club and Nomalanga Mathe of Sizane High School won the Winter Chess tournament held at Bulawayo Polytechnic at the weekend. Nyoni won the men’s category with a 32.5 tie breaker after being level on six points with defending champion Thabang Moyo who had 32.0.
In the women’s category Nomalanga Mathe, the Sizane High School pupil won on six points, Busi Ncube from Bulawayo Polytechnic was second with five points.
Patrice Sibanda with five points emerged the best scholar in the boys’ category and Nomalanga Mathe in the girls’ section. The two pupils are both from Sizane High School.
Bhekile Ndlovu and Archieford from Gifford High School were second and third best scholars respectively in the boys’ category.
Tyl Musasa came second and Maud Mpofu from Sizane High School was the third best scholar in the girls’ section.
Faustino Nyangari from Bulawayo Polytechnic with 5.5 points was the best Bulawayo Polytechnic player while Gibson Manhuru with 5.0 points was the best veteran. Nkosenhle Mlibaza from Milton junior was crowned the best youngster with 2.0 points.
The tournament was organised by Bulawayo Chess Club, a member of Bulawayo Chess Association.
