A local educator in Bulawayo’s Emganwini suburb has integrated more than 50 vulnerable children into her private preschool programme since 2018, providing tuition, uniforms, and stationery to those unable to afford basic education costs.

Pamela Garai, who founded her preschool in 2018 after financial constraints stalled her initial plans to open an orphanage, currently self-funds the placement of several students. In 2026, she is supporting four children and aims to expand that number to 10 by year-end.

While much of the support is generated internally, Garai noted that external donors from the United Kingdom contributed groceries and graduation fees during a difficult period last year. These donors have reportedly indicated a willingness to maintain support for a limited number of students in the current academic cycle.

Despite the charitable nature of the initiative, Garai maintains a strict policy regarding the privacy of the beneficiaries.

“I avoid taking photographs of vulnerable children to protect their privacy. I take them in knowing their situation, and I do everything for them as far as school is concerned. If there are trips or activities, I include them fully,” she said.

The school’s model focuses on social integration, ensuring that subsidised students are indistinguishable from the rest of the student body. According to Garai, all pupils receive identical food, uniforms, and stationery to prevent social isolation or the stigmatization of lower-income students.

Beyond internal placements, the institution has scheduled a community outreach initiative for late January. The school plans to donate clothing and groceries to a local orphanage to be selected by the end of the month.
