Bulawayo City councillors have commended the city’s Fire Brigade for their efforts in combating fires both within the city and surrounding areas, successfully saving lives, livestock and property in the process.
According to the latest council report, Ward 26 councillor Mpumelelo Moyo said it was pleasing to note that the Fire Brigade from time to time had responded to calls outside the City’s boundaries.
Just last week, the Brigade responded to a distress call after veld fires had engulfed Elephant Lodge, previously known as Jamaica Inn, about 40km outside the city along the Bulawayo Gwanda Road.
“The Fire Brigade’s equipment was one of the best in the country. Some of the equipment was obtained through partnerships with NGOs like Operation Florian,” said Cllr Moyo.

Another Councillor, Thandiwe Moyo of Ward Seven concurred, adding that the City’s Fire Brigade had extended its hand to surrounding Rural District Councils and offered Firefighting and rescue training to Rural District Councils Fire Brigades.
“The Fire Brigade’s Fire prevention teams were responding well to various invitations in the wards to offer various lectures on fire and disaster response management. As the dry season was approaching more fire campaigns should be done to prevent veld fire outbreaks,” she said.
Clr Adrian Redani Moyo of Ward Two commented the Fire Brigade’s quick response to a veld fire in Saurcetown which could have burnt down an electricity substation. He said in the last rainy season 2024/2025 the Fire Brigade together with other stakeholders had provided temporary shelter and other goods to families that had been affected by strong winds that blew off house roofs.
Clr Moyo emphasized the need for more fire prevention campaigns.
