For years the citya��s arts practitioners have been crying foul because of the feeling that they are always shortchanged when they go for national award ceremonies in the capital.
For some city artistes, the playing field is not level and the result is that they feel hard done whenever awards season comes along. Be it the Namas or Zimas, year after year, Bulawayo artistes always have a few grievances.
This year however, the city will finally get its award ceremony, with the Bulawayo Arts Awards set to make their debut on the citya��s cultural calendar.
Bulawayo Arts Awards (BAA) have been billed as a multi-disciplinary arts awards showcase that recognise and honour exceptional individuals and collaborative artistic efforts in the city of Bulawayo, Matabeleland North and South.
In a statement, one of the organisers of the award ceremony Nkululeko Nkala said the Bulawayo Arts Awards were not meant to counter any awards or forms of recognition in Bulawayo or the country in general but were instead meant to complement the efforts that are already being made to recognise and honour artistes from the Matabeleland region.
a�?The awards know no race or tribe as the awards base is a cosmopolitan city. The awards are being curated to recognise good effort and talent among local artistes. The inaugural edition of the awards will be held on 30 June at The Large City Hall in Bulawayo,a�? he said
The awards, which will officially be launched on 15 March when the categories and nomination details and rules will also be unpacked, will cover disciplines that include music, theatre, dance, literary art, poetry, comedy, fashion, film, visual art and media.
