AWARD-WINNING Afro-fusion musician Bhila believes that artistes from Bulawayo possess the quality and talent needed to compete on major stages, but says consistency and determination are essential to unlocking the city’s full potential.
Bhila shared these sentiments after performing alongside celebrated guitarist Sylent Nqo and South African singer Phila Dlozi at the Chill and Gin event held at a restaurant in Bulawayo on Sunday.
“The experience was overwhelming, and I enjoyed every moment of it. The people in attendance were craving for the performances, and when we delivered, they embraced the sets and enjoyed themselves as well.

“Sharing the stage with accomplished creatives like Dlozi and Nqo was beautiful because I learnt a lot from them. I actually realised that we are not far at all, regarding the craft and vision.
“For artistes like me from Bulawayo, we need to push harder and stay consistent because we have the quality and product ready for the local market,” said Bhila.
The event, which formed part of Sylent Nqo and The Noisemakers’ national tour, offered a night of live instrumentation, soulful performances, and African-inspired storytelling, drawing a mature audience with an appreciation for authentic live music.

The experience has also opened doors for possible collaborations between the artistes. Bhila, known for his hit song Emaweni, said discussions about working together have already begun and could lead to exciting new music.
“I’m hoping for something definitely, as we talked about collaboration, and there is a massive possibility. If it comes to fruition, it will be a win for Bulawayo and me. I desperately need an international collaboration to broaden my reach, and my sound deserves such.”
The performance highlighted the growing opportunities available to Bulawayo artistes to collaborate with regional talents, while also reinforcing Bhila’s belief that the city’s creatives can thrive if they remain persistent and consistent.
