Bulawayo Kwela Kings, who will perform on Hifa’s Lay’s Global Stage. Defying age, these guardians of the art form will transport both young and old to the heyday of this type of township music through their mastery of the penny whistle.
This ensemble are the undisputed kings of kwela music. The eight-piece band are a national treasure who perform popular township jazz hits from the 1960s and 1970s.
Kwela music is a unique and important part of our musical history, with its distinctive penny-whistle sound. The Kwela Kings transport you back in time with their take on the hits of yesteryear.
They are joined on stage by Albert Nyathi. Nyathi is a performance poet, whose work explores the depths and diversities of African traditions.
