A 23-YEAR-OLD Bulawayo man has appeared in court for allegedly assaulting another man with a knobkerrie, leaving the victim fighting for his life.

Godknows Phiri of Old Pumula suburb appeared before Western Commonage regional magistrate Mr Pasipanodya Maturure facing a charge of attempted murder. He was remanded in custody to 31 December pending trial.

Prosecuting, Ms Christina Manyika told the court that the incident occurred on 16 December at about 3PM opposite a house in Old Lobengula suburb. Phiri was in the company of the complainant, Thabo Masina (33), when he allegedly accused him of stealing his cellphone.

Ms Manyika said a misunderstanding ensued after Phiri failed to locate his cellphone, resulting in a violent confrontation.

“The accused person took a knobkerrie and assaulted the complainant several times all over the body,” she said.

The court was told that Masina sustained serious injuries as a result of the assault and is still admitted to hospital in a critical condition.

A report was subsequently made to the police, leading to Phiri’s arrest and court appearance.
