A Bulawayo man has been sentenced to seven years in prison after he stabbed another man, who later died, during an argument over a sex worker.
In a statement, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) said that the man, Alfred Ngwenya (24), was arrested at an apostolic shrine while being “cleansed” of the crime in 2023. He was arraigned before the Bulawayo High Court to answer charges of culpable homicide.
The circumstances are that on 15 November 2023, at around 3 AM, the offender (Ngwenya) and the now deceased had a misunderstanding over a sex worker, which led to a fight in which Ngwenya stabbed the deceased twice, once on the thigh and once on the back, before fleeing the scene.
The NPAZ reported that about an hour later, a passer-by discovered the deceased in a pool of blood and made a report. Investigations led to the arrest of the offender in Silobela while he was being “cleansed” at an apostolic shrine. He also led to the recovery of an AK-47 rifle, the NPAZ added.
Ngwenya pleaded guilty and was sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment, three years of which were suspended on the condition of good behaviour.
