A 34-year-old man was fatally stabbed following an argument that erupted after fellow imbibers mistakenly knocked down his beer bottle on Sunday night.

Khulani Nleya died at Mpilo Central Hospital where he was admitted to the intensive care unit after being thoroughly beaten by Vusumuzi Khumalo (20) who eventually stabbed him saying he caused trouble by fighting other imbibers.

Bulawayo police spokesperson, Inspector Abednico Ncube, confirmed the incident, saying Khumalo is still on the run following the incident.

“On May 14 May 2023 at around 10PM, the now deceased, was at a bottle store at Umguza, drinking beer in the company of other villagers. One of the patrons mistakenly knocked down the now deceased’s beer bottle.

“This did not go well with the now-deceased and a misunderstanding arose between them,” said Insp Ncube.

“The accused person who was standing nearby intervened and started quarreling with the now deceased, accusing him of causing trouble.  Khumalo picked a snooker stick and assaulted the now deceased several times all over the body until it broke. He then withdrew an okapi knife from his trousers pocket and stabbed the now deceased once on the forehead. The now deceased sustained a deep cut and he bled profusely.”

Insp Ncube said Nleya was rushed to Mpilo where he was admitted to the intensive care unit but he later died.

“Police urge members of the public not to put the law into their own hands but try to find amicable ways to solve their problems especially when under the influence of alcohol. We appeal to members of the public with information that may assist in the location of the accused person to come forward,” he added.
