Boxers from Bulawayo, Matabeleland North and South provinces will tomorrow trade leather at a Bulawayo hotel. The boxing tournament is being organised by Bulawayo Boxing Association (BBA).
The competition will be used as a final selection to identify boxers to represent Bulawayo Metropolitan Province at this year’s Zimbabwe National Youth Games to be held in Masvingo this month.
BBA vice-chairman Ezwell Ndlovu said they invited Matabeleland North and South boxers to participate in the competition so that they are able to select the best boxers for Masvingo games.
He said that the city’s fine crop of young boxers was not only ready for the tournament but was determined to defend their title as the Youth Games champions.
“In our last Youth Games competition we came first and I am confident that our boxers are more than ready to defend the title,” said Ndlovu.
Samson Masiyambumbi who represented Zimbabwe at the Youth Championships in Poland last year and Shepard Machaya both from Nketa are expected to give fans value for money at tomorrow’s tournament.
Lobengula Youth Club is expected to pin its hopes on young and exciting Cecil Toto who is proving to be too hot to handle in the welterweight division.
Last year’s Zimbabwe National Youth Games medallists Thenjiwe Foloma, Nagra Saidi, Cecelia Masikati and Queneth Dube will lead Percy Boxing Club with Bulawayo West’s finest boxer being Shailine Mguni.
Veteran trainer Philip “Striker” Ndlovu of Tshaka will unleash Andile Ncube who is said to be following in the footsteps of Meluleki Ngulube and Ntando Sibanda who have since turned professional.
Senior boxing matches will spice up the event.
