TERROR struck New Lobengula in the early hours of Monday when masked armed robbers stormed a nightclub, stabbing staff, shocking a cashier and vanishing with cash and cellphones.
The attack happened around 3AM on 29 September, leaving two workers nursing knife wounds and a shaken cashier robbed of US$550 and her gadgets.
According to Bulawayo deputy police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Thandekile Ndlovu, the 45-year-old female manager opened the back door after a knock. She was immediately confronted by two masked suspects armed with a pistol, knife and electric shocker.
“She screamed for help and they stabbed her with a knife once at the back of the head and she sustained a deep cut,” said the deputy provincial spokesperson.
Her cries brought a male colleague rushing to her aid but he too was attacked. “He met the accused persons in the corridor. They also stabbed him with a knife once above the right eye and he sustained a cut,” said Asst Insp Ndlovu.
The robbers then turned their attention to the cashier, zapping her with an electric shocker and demanding money. Terrified, she surrendered a plastic bag containing US$550 and her two cellphones. Unsatisfied, the robbers demanded more cash and fired a shot into the nightclub’s front glass door before escaping through the back.
The wounded staff members were rushed to hospital for treatment.
Police have since launched investigations into the daring raid. Asst Insp Ndlovu urged the business community to beef up security.
“We urge the business community to increase security on their premises to avoid such incidents,” she said. “We appeal to anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of the accused persons to report to the nearest police station.”
The robbers remain on the run as shaken revellers and residents come to terms with the violent strike that shattered the nightclub’s usual nightlife buzz.
