In the city of kings, a new concept is taking the nightlife scene by storm. Bulawayo Queens, a group of five talented young women, is redefining the way we experience entertainment in nightclubs and bars.

Led by 25-year-old Nomaswazi Dlamini, this dynamic group has ditched the traditional stage performance model, opting for a more interactive approach as club hostesses.

As club hostesses, Bulawayo Queens provides more than just entertainment, they offer exceptional customer service, making patrons feel welcome and valued.

“We chose to be hostesses because we enjoy interacting with people and making them feel welcome,” Nomaswazi says.

Gone are the days of dance groups performing on stage in crowded clubs. Instead, Bulawayo Queens takes the show to the crowd, engaging with audiences and providing top-notch bottle services and event hosting.

This concept, popularised in countries like South Africa, is new to Zimbabwe and Bulawayo Queens is pioneering the trend.

Mhondiwa Mhepo former production manager for Ziyakhupha Music, a vibrant stable under the legendary Amakhosi Theatre, who witnessed first hand the pulse of Bulawayo’s entertainment scene during a defining era said entertainment has evolved and he takes that as growth.

“Yesterday’s performers are today’s producers, managers, and mentors — quietly shaping the next wave from behind the scenes. New pubs and clubs have emerged, and the demand for dance entertainment that once electrified the city has birthed a generation of multi-disciplinary arts,” he alluded.

He also spoke of the transition from how the old leisure centres used to look when bands such as Amakhosikazi and dance groups such as Girls Lamusica used to dominate.

The concept of club hostesses adopted by Bulawayo Queens involves entertainers engaging more into the crowd, however, keeping the groove alive.

“We wanted to create a group that would not only entertain but also provide excellent customer service.”
The group’s journey began at Nexus, where they started as bottle girls and bonded over their shared passion for music and dance.

“We were inspired to start Bulawayo Queens because we love entertaining people and sharing our passion for music and dance,” Nomaswazi explains. “We wanted to create a group that would bring joy and excitement to events.”

However, the group faces challenges, including maintaining a professional image and dealing with harassment from some customers who fail to understand the scope of their work.

Despite these obstacles, Bulawayo Queens remains committed to their craft.

The group is looking forward to popularising their brand and going beyond regional boarders bringing a fresh and exciting perspective to the world of entertainment.
