POLICE in Bulawayo have confirmed three fatal road accidents that occurred last Saturday, leaving three people dead on the spot in separate incidents.

Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele, said the first accident took place along Khami Road in the morning, where a 30-year-old man from Nkulumane suburb is now facing culpable homicide charges.

“A fatal road traffic accident occurred along Khami Road opposite Delta Beverages when the driver of a Mazda CX-5 struck an unidentified male pedestrian, believed to be around 35 years old. The victim had no identification documents on him,” said Asst Insp Msebele.

The deceased was described as wearing a dirty white pair of shorts and a black T-shirt.

“He appeared to be a mentally ill person. While attempting to cross the road, he was hit by the vehicle, sustaining severe head and multiple body injuries and died on the spot,” said Asst Insp Msebele.

According to the police, speeding was the cause of the accident, and the driver has since been charged with culpable homicide.

In another incident that occurred just before midnight on Saturday, a 40-year-old man was killed in a hit-and-run accident along Masiyephambili Drive.

“Another fatal accident occurred involving a motor vehicle and a pedestrian. Unfortunately, the motorist who struck the victim fled the scene, and no witnesses were present to provide details,” said Asst Insp Msebele.

The deceased was later identified as Emmanuel Murambwi.

“His body was positively identified by his uncle and has been taken to the United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) for a post-mortem. The driver responsible will face culpable homicide charges once identified,” said Asst Insp Msebele.

The third fatal accident also happened along Khami Road, where a 40-year-old driver lost his life after his vehicle overturned.

“The accident occurred in the Kelvin Industrial Area when the driver of a Toyota Hilux hit a pothole, lost control, veered off the road, and the vehicle landed on its side,” said Asst Insp Msebele.

A motorist who witnessed the accident quickly alerted police.

“The driver was trapped underneath the wreckage, and an ambulance crew pronounced him dead at the scene. The Bulawayo Fire Brigade was called in to retrieve his body,” said Asst Insp Msebele.
