Bulawayo residents voice concerns over high water bills

BULAWAYO residents are increasingly voicing concerns over rising water bills, which have sparked frustration and distrust in the City Council’s billing system.
During a recent Council meeting, councillors discussed numerous complaints from residents who reported receiving inflated consumption bills, leading to delays in payments.
The main complaint is the source of the bills as residents get water about two days every week in some suburbs while some areas have gone for months without water.

Councillors highlighted that the discrepancies in billing have eroded public confidence in the Council’s ability to manage water resources effectively.
The Council is now under pressure to investigate the billing system and implement measures to rectify errors. Mayor, David Coltart acknowledged the critical need to restore trust between the Council and residents, emphasising the importance of transparency in billing practices.
The Council is considering the automation of water meters to enhance accuracy and improve service delivery. Additionally, the Council plans to hold community forums to address residents’ concerns and provide information on how to understand and manage their water usage effectively.

This initiative aims to foster a collaborative relationship between the Council and the community in addressing ongoing challenges related to water management.
