THE Bulawayo Sneaker Expo, which started as a movement in 2021, has proved to be more than just a fashion event, as it has become a celebration of style, culture, creativity and expression.

Over the past five years, it has strategically positioned itself as Zimbabwe’s only event dedicated to sneaker culture and in doing so, it has cultivated a loyal following of enthusiasts eager to express themselves through footwear and fashion.

From its humble beginnings, the expo has evolved into a vibrant, inclusive space where everyone, whether a seasoned collector with a wardrobe full of rare kicks or someone just stepping into sneaker culture, is welcomed with open arms.

It has become a bridge connecting people from all walks of life, creating a safe and dynamic environment for them to share their passions and showcase their individuality.

The vision for the expo is fuelled by a small, but passionate team of sneaker lovers, including Leroy Waps and Mthulisi Moyo, who dreamt of creating a platform where like-minded individuals could gather, celebrate and educate one another about their shared enthusiasm for sneakers.

“We wanted to create an event where sneakerheads and fashionistas could connect, share ideas and showcase their unique styles. Today, I can proudly say that the expo has become the only gathering in Zimbabwe that truly celebrates sneaker culture,” said Leroy Waps.

What started as a niche event has transformed into a vibrant hive of creativity and artistry, attracting notable local brands such as Stars29, City of Kings Apparel and Harare’s popular Hatipfeki Junk. But the Byo Sneaker Expo is not just about footwear on display, it has become a comprehensive lifestyle affair.

Visitors are treated to mouth-watering culinary experiences, performances by local artistes and a showcase of home-grown creativity that extends far beyond the sneakers themselves.

The expo has also played a crucial role in promoting domestic tourism, drawing sneaker lovers and style enthusiasts from across Zimbabwe and even from as far as the United Kingdom and South Africa, all brought together by their shared love of sneaker culture.

Its cultural and economic significance has not gone unnoticed. At one point, Deputy Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry Tongai Mnangagwa attended the expo in his personal capacity and endorsed it as a powerful platform that aligns with Zimbabwe’s efforts to promote domestic tourism while also showcasing Bulawayo’s cultural richness.

The rise of eco-conscious fashion and the importance of sustainable consumerism have also found a home at the expo. Each edition has sparked meaningful conversations about conscious buying, authenticity and the value of investing in quality footwear.

“On most of our previous editions, sneakerheads have engaged in lively discussions about their favourite kicks, sharing untold stories behind their collections.

“Whether it’s a limited-edition pair from a remote collaboration or a pair that has been lovingly restored, their experiences in sneaker culture are woven with tales of nostalgia and passion.

“We’ve also been advocating for consumers to support local brands because they provide original and genuine collections that can be trusted. We’ve also taught people how to distinguish between a fake and an original because buying a sneaker has to be an investment,” said Waps.

The 2025 edition of the expo will be held on 19 October at Mystique Gardens and organisers are promising a fresh and dynamic experience for attendees. Beyond the usual showcases from local designers and emerging brands, this year’s event will also feature guest appearances by notable sneakerheads from South Africa, who will offer expert lessons and deeper insights into sneaker culture and fashion trends.

“Every year, we push the boundaries a little further. We’ve learnt so much about our community and what they love and we’re determined to create an even more engaging environment each time.

“Everyone who attends the expo must learn a thing or two about sneakers and fashion and this year, we’re working on inviting notable sneakerheads from South Africa who can come and give us lessons on sneaker wear,” said Waps.

As the date approaches, local influencers, stylists and sneaker aficionados are gearing up to showcase their best looks and most prized pairs. The expo promises to once again burst with colour, creativity and culture, celebrating sneaker design and the stories, people and passion behind it.
